Netherlands: Utrecht, interreligious meeting on the Scriptures. “Texts on violence in holy books”

“Texts on violence in holy books” is the name of the interreligious workshop that the Permanent Committee of the Dutch Church Council has organised in Utrecht on 1st June. Guests include priests, ministers, pastors and all those who in their work “have to deal with and explain passages from the Bible and Koran that have to do with a violent context”, the organisers explain. The Permanent Committee had already explained this subject at a meeting last year with the help of some exegetes but because of the great interest that surrounds this subject it is now arranging the workshop again with “experts in the three monotheistic religions to explore this complex but fascinating topic”. Lecturers include Yaser Ellethy, professor at the Centre of Islamic Theology at Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam; Raphael Evers, rabbi of the Jewish community of the Netherlands and rector of the Dutch Israelite Institute; Ron van den Hout, exegete and general vicar of the diocese of ‘s-Hertogenbosch; and Sahiron Syamsuddin, professor of Islamic studies at the Islamic State University of Yogyakarta, Indonesia.
